Lead field-level Monitoring and Evaluation activities, overseeing all phases of Monitoring and Evaluation Program

About the Job

Village Enterprise is seeking a Fellow to lead its field-level Monitoring and Evaluation activities, design and manage innovative pilot projects as well as current Special Projects in a highly dynamic team.
The M&E Fellow will also support East African Staff to implement and improve the organization’s core program, supervise interns and regional manager, and monitor program implementation.
A minimum time commitment of one year is required. After 10 months, the operations team will conduct a performance review and assuming very good performance, future job opportunities within the organization beyond the one-year Fellowship will be explored.
Duties and Responsibilities

M & E Role:

Manage and assess Village Enterprise Business Owner targeting (an ultra-poor targeting process)
Design and lead special project evaluations, write reports for funders
Oversee and increase the quality and efficiency of core and special project monitoring
Manage relations with external evaluation partners for a planned impact evaluation
Supervise the training of staff and enumerators on data collection/interviewing, data entry, analysis and other tasks as required
Provide oversight for Microenterprise Development Plan data collection and analysis
Operations Role:

Assist in the implementation, monitoring and expansion of the Village Enterprise core program
Provide management oversight and leadership, in cooperation with the Senior Director of Programs and Operations, Country Directors and field staff in Kakamega-Kenya, Soroti and Hoima-Uganda
Promote a strong work ethic among the Regional Manager and Business Mentors
Train trainers, mentor other employees and build capacity in country offices
Act as a liaison between the Field Operations Team and Development Team in the US
Qualifications/Job Requirements

Education

Masters’ degree is required with concentrations in Development or Agricultural Economics, International Development, Public Policy, Statistics or other applied social research strongly preferred.
Previous experience in both quantitative and qualitative evaluation preferred.
Ability to design and implement research based on randomized control trials, regression discontinuity, propensity score matching and other methods preferred.
Working experience (2+ years)

Experience in Management/leadership role is preferred
Experience living/working/traveling in a developing country or emerging economy
Experience in project design, business planning, product innovation or other entreneurial activities
Critical Thinking & Analysis Skills

Must be a very strong critical thinker able to identify potential solutions to challenges in new environments
Must be able to use Excel to analyze data, budgets and financial reports
Working independently and as part of a team

Experience working effectively in a highly independent capacity-self managing, taking ownership of goals, developing work plans and self deadlines.
Experience working as part of a diverse team and willingness to work via e-mail, Skype and other internet based communications.
Strong writing and oral communication skills required, as this role will involve report writing and training at times
High-quality execution

Dedication to producing and executing high quality projects, tasks and recommendations quickly  with a high level of accuracy and systematic attention to detail
Passion for innovative approaches to poverty reduction around the world, including but not limited to social entrepreneurship and business development in Africa
Strong evaluation design, survey design and data analysis
Willingness to commit to living in rural areas of East Africa

This involves living in areas where there are few other foreigners/experts few stores and restaurants, limited access to electricity at times, unpaved roads that lead to bumpy /uncomfortable car rides during field work.
We are seeking for a minimum commitment of 1 year and we expect all candidates to be willing to commit to this time period even if the going gets tough.
All candidates must have the ability to be patient and adaptable in difficult work situations. There are many challenges to working in rural East Africa and patience is required to be effective in this environment. Must be able to adapt when required (which is often)
Language proficiency: Fluency in English required, Swahili is not required

Other skills experience desired

Experience in curriculum development. This role will require curriculum development for Village Enterprise' Training Program
Strong IT Skills preferred including database management, network setup & troubleshooting

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

The Product Manager will be responsible for:

Project Development & Launch

Coordinate launch and commercialization of new products and offers with the relevant channels and ensure successful go-to-market deployments for each product
Formulate, direct and coordinate product related activities and policies to promote products and services
Own product requirements and work with MTN cross-functional product development teams to refine product requirement specifications for Bottom of the pyramid (BOP)
Product Processes

Participate in the drafting of Business Processes for New Products in coordination with all actors (MFS team, Telco, Banks)
Develop new procedures as required for the roll-out of new functionality and continual enhancement of procedures for efficiency
Provide product support to internal customers on functionality issues and ensure new functionalities, processes and procedures are fully understood
Relationship Management

Track customer and market needs as articulated by GF, MTN and Banks
Manage a Bill & Melinda Gates funded project to support GF bank and Telco partner(s) product development as they expand into rural areas

Write test plans and execute unit, assembly, application, and integration testing to certify applications with mobile operators and financial institutions.
Successfully communicate with the rest of the development team throughout the development process, participate in brain storming sessions on design and implementation specifications, aid in code reviews, and incorporate feedback from code reviews into their own code

JOB SUMMARY:

The Application Analyst & Usability Engineer (AA&UE) will aid in the mobile, web and database application development process at Grameen Foundation’s AppLab Uganda by performing the following functions:

Applications design and specifications gathering, including gathering customer requirements, defining application features, and turning them into technical specifications for use by the development team.

Quality assurance and testing to ensure the highest quality and usability of Applab’s applications and to optimize the user experience. This will involve running pre-release user acceptance tests and sign offs, creating and maintaining test plans for the different Applab applications and systems, reporting and filing bugs, issues or failed tests and signing off releases.
The Engineer will also help to facilitate aspects of the user experience design lifecycle including definition of organizational and user needs, recommending user experience improvements, collaborating with the User Experience Designer, developing and running usability studies, application prototyping and ethnographic research.
REPORTING AND RELATIONSHIPS: The position will report to the Senior Technology Analyst, Grameen Foundation Uganda.

Plan, execute and analyze usability testing activities

Provide regular updates on application usage and user feedback

Function Area/Department: Marketing and Sales

Objective:

The Sales and Marketing manager is responsible for exports to Rwanda, Burundi, Congo and Kenya. He is expected to coordinate with all concerned parties to support and increase sales volumes in international market whilst keeping close relations with clients. He will also expand the client base, managing key accounts and maintain the marketing database.
The Sales and Marketing Manager will be responsible for a variety of activities including, but not limited to, evaluating financial structures, prepare reports to expedite the billing process and may also have to ensure that shipments are in compliance with the laws and regulations governing the export industry. This position will be located in Uganda (Kampala) but export manager will be expected to plan regular domestic and regional travel.
He should have strong interpersonal and presentation skills and should be able to communicate efficiently both verbally and in written form and can translate complex technical details to simple form. He must have good leadership skills and able to organize, motivate and liaise with the junior staff. He should be versatile and therefore able to carry out functions across various levels of the organization. He should be able to adjust to fast changing business conditions and is always result oriented.
Duties and Responsibilities;

Must have  broad experience in export sales, preferably having dealt with construction companies, distributors or wholesalers in E. Africa
Develop market plans that support export sales; facilitating both long and short-term sales forecasts, calculated risks & high success rates.
Must be able to detect opportunities at target companies within the geographically defined region.
Should have an excellent understanding and application for both technical and commercial solution Good presentation and communication skills.
Must have excellent written and oral knowledge of English - additional languages French and Swahili are a must.
Develop and execute innovative export strategies, generate sales and Submit monthly business plans.
Meets sales financial objectives and provide Quotations / Proforma Invoices and Tenders.
Track competitors and identify new product opportunities through market analysis.
Identify and build relationships with potential stakeholders.
Ensuring the accuracy and completeness of system documentation.
Knowledge of import and export regulations and ability to adhere to them.
Planning, monitoring, appraising, and reviewing job contributions; planning and reviewing compensation actions; enforcing policies.

Must have a proven successful international new business or export track-record.

Candidate should have strong influence management and collaborative skills.
